BOMAG is offering two new stabilisers, the compact MPH 364 as well as its larger RS500
The road market for recycling and stabilisation machines has developed quickly in recent times, with sales of these units now strong in many territories around the world. Pioneered in the US, these machines are offered by an array of manufacturers in the US, Europe and now China. However it is fair to say that the cutting edge technology developments in this market come from the US or Europe, while Chinese units tend to be more basic machines aimed at the home market or developing countries.
As with milling machines, the Wirtgen Group has established a strong position in the road recycling segment. However the company is now facing tougher competition worldwide, particularly from US firms Caterpillar and Roadtec and its European rival BOMAG.
This last company is introducing two new soil stabilisers, the RS500 and the MPH364. The new RS500 recycling is a sophisticated machines that said to be designed to meet the needs of customers, with innovative features including a cab that can be raised to improve operator visibility while working, and lowered for transport from site to site. Another important feature of the RS500 recycler is its ability to offset the cutter drum by 300mm to either side. This allows the machine to work close to an edge or kerb and also means that there is no need to turn around on sites with restricted space. The machine is equipped with BOMAG’s innovative Flexmix recycling technology, which offers automatic operation and power comes from a diesel delivering 373kW.
Meanwhile the new MPH 364 recycler and soil stabiliser features an operating weight of 17tonnes and a working width of 2.005m. The firm says that at the moment, there is no comparable machine available for this application anywhere in the world in this weight category. Its compact design, 17tonne operating weight and powerful 268.5kW engine suit the MPH 364 to use in small urban projects, such as car parks, minor roads and paths.
It has a rear-mounted milling rotor for manoeuvrability, while the driver has a good view of the relevant work areas around the machine and can negotiate accurately around obstacles. The machine can also be used in larger road construction projects. Good ergonomics and ease of operation make the machine more versatile still. Other features include a water spray system to minimise dust, as well as ease of operation and good ergonomics. The driver's seat can be turned to provide a good view of the front and the rotor. A guidance system is also fitted to allow the driver to run the machine accurately along a working edge.

The machine can be used to improve soil or stabilise the subsoils in embankments, utilising soil, lime, fly ash or cement to mix into the ground. When used for recycling, the MPH 364 can also tear up old asphalt surfaces, including the bearing course. The unit crushes the material and mixes in a new binder.
However, there is also a small specialist company competing in the market for stabilisers. Italian firm FAE says that the latest version of its STABI/H soil stabiliser offers increased productivity. Designed to be towed behind tractors with power outputs of 228-335.5kW the STABI H benefits from an innovative rotor design and integrated transmission. This unit can be used on small and large construction sites, from motorways to secondary
Infrastructure as well as parking lots. It has a variable displacement chamber as well as an integrated rotor transmission. It can work to depths of 500mm and is said to ensure optimum mixing quality at all working depths. It has a robust design and a patented holder-teeth system said to increase working life and performance for all working conditions.
Key features include a chain-protected, wide loading opening as well as a dedicated gearbox cooling system for the gearbox, inspection ports for easy maintenance, automatic water injection and an optional grader flap with spring damper.
