A new US$307.5 million highway project is now underway in Abu Dhabi, with completion expected in the second quarter of 2020. The project involves building a new road link from Umm Lafina and the Al Reem islands to the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Road. The work is being split into two separate contracts. One contract involves the construction of a 6.5km road connection from Al Reem Island and traversing Umm Lafina Island. This section will feature three lanes in either direction, as well as three bridges spanning the canals along the route. The other contract is for a 4km road connecting the south side of Umm Lafina Island with the Syeikh Zayed bin Sultan Road. The project also includes the construction of two additional bridges spanning canals along the route, as well as a new intersection.
