Work to upgrade an 8.5km section of toll road is underway to the north of Austin, Texas. Improvements for the 183A toll road involve building two additional lanes in either direction. The US$259 million project is around 55% complete at present and is due to be finished in 2025.

The project is intended to cut congestion for the stretch of the route between Leander and Liberty Hill and is being managed by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority. One of the most challenging aspects of the project is tunnelling underneath Highway 29 The improvement work will include facilities for vulnerable road users.

The project is one of several in and around the city of Austin, which is experiencing population growth and is having to develop its transport infrastructure to cope.

Another major project is the $606 million work on the Interstate 35 Capital Express North. This is being managed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and should take five years to carry out. The aim of the project is to boost traffic flow and cut congestion.

The road runs through the centre of Austin and currently experiences regular traffic delays for drivers. The work includes a new high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction along I-35 from SH 45 North to US 290 East, as well as upgrading six bridges along the route
