Major road infrastructure developments are underway in Italy that will boost the country’s transportation network

Italian road firm ANAS is opening tenders worth a total of €160 million for road safety improvements. The aim of the 16 separate lots will be to stabilise slopes and embankments on routes in mountainous or coastal areas. Contact nets and rockfall barriers will be installed. In addition, environmental measures will be carried out in certain areas.

ANAS is also offering a tender for €80 million of work for bridge monitoring work. This will also be split into 16 separate lots. Sophisticated monitoring technology will be installed, which will help optimise maintenance. Using the systems ANAS will be able to carry out predictive maintenance on structures, reducing the overall cost of maintenance over the long term.

Another of the key developments is the approval of €400 million of funding from the EC that will be used to upgrade the country’s trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T). Of this, €350 million will be used for the 55km Brenner base rail tunnel, which is costing more than €2 billion to build. Funding will also be provided for the Rovereto Bypass.
