Construction of the Padma Bridge project in Bangladesh now looks likely to cost more than planned, while the completion deadline has also been extended. The project will now cost US$226.6 million, with its completion now expected in mid-2024. This has been approved by the Executive Committee of national Economic Council (ECNEC) of Bangladesh.
The Padma Bridge is 6.15km multipurpose road-rail bridge spanning the Padma River. When completed it will be the largest bridge in Bangladesh and the first fixed river crossing for road traffic. It will connect Louhajong, Munshiganj to Shariatpur and Madaripur, linking the south-west of the country, to northern and eastern regions.
