New road construction work in California will help cut congestion on existing routes. The work is costing close to US$104 million and will commence later in 2016 to the north of the city of San Diego. The funding for the work is coming from the California Transportation Commission (Caltrans). The work will form part of the $700 million North Coast Corridor Programme, which is being administered jointly by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and Caltrans. Explosive demolition techniques were used to remove a bridge structure in the US at the weekend. In California on the west coast, the removal of a pier from the old Bay Bridge structure was carried out. The explosive demolition was organised by 5246 Caltrans, with around 10tonnes of explosives being used to blast the redundant bridge pier. Protective layers of wood and steel were used to prevent debris from the massive 24.4m x 42.7m bridge pier from being thrown into the air.

A bridge demolition job is underway in California at present. The Carmenita Road Bridge, which crosses the Santa Ana Freeway, is being removed in stages. The work is being carried out at night when the I-5 route is closed to traffic, so as to minimise the impact for daytime peak traffic flow. The work is being carried out by a specialist contractor on behalf of 5246 Caltrans in the Santa Fe Springs area. The three week job is being closed overnight seven days a week between Rosecrans and Valley View avenues. The work forms part of the Carmenita Road Interchange project.
