IRF Geneva is pleased to support this year the Bridges & Road Engineering and Maintenance UAE conference which will take place – for the third year running - in Abu Dhabi on 22nd-25th May 2016
The UAE has envisioned a new way of developing and carrying out infrastructure.
They have shifted their focus on foresight to ensure a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable urban structure, which will enable them to achieve a successful urban revolution by 2030. To achieve this it is vital that strong foundations are in place in terms of current assets management and coherent and cohesive guidelines and frameworks are in place for new projects.
For the first time in the history of the UAE the infrastructure is becoming old and reaching the end of its original specifications. These essential assets need to be renovated and maintained, and the conference shall explore in which ways this can be achieved. This forum will explore how to ensure that the urban infrastructure is able to cope with the envisioned social and environmental development of the region.
In the past the conference has hosted senior government representatives from the Emirates, including the Department of Transport, Al Ain Municipality as well as the pioneering developers, contractors and consultants from around the UAE. The event offers a key opportunity to look into leading case studies on infrastructure management, engineering measures for road safety, sustainable road construction and maintenance.
1201 IRF Geneva will be hosting back-to-back with the conference a workshop on “Road Safety Infrastructure Management Tools”. Organised by IRF Geneva, this workshop will look into the road safety management activities that are needed to deliver the recommendations of the Action Plan of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety and the tools/methodologies that can be used to do so.
There are a variety of infrastructure safety management tools and methodologies that have been developed to help evaluate, prioritise and monitor road infrastructure safety performance; however there are limited guidelines available that describe how and when each tool should be used in order to support a robust road safety infrastructure management system.
The road safety management activities that will be explored can be applied across all new or existing road types (urban, semi-urban and rural) and to ensure the safety of all road user groups. Some of the issues the workshop will look into:
• Blackspot Analysis and Treatment
• Maintenance Inspections
• Network/Area Analysis and Treatment
• Road Safety Assessment, Audit, Impact Assessment, Inspection
• Star Rating (iRAP)
• Work Zone Safety
An IRF Certificate will be delivered to the participants attending the workshop. IRF members benefit from a 20% discount on the registration fee of both the conference and the workshop.
Evonik launches Road Safety Award
For more than 50 years,4009 Evonik – the inventor of MMA cold plastic road markings - has been at the forefront in efforts to improve road safety and disseminate best practices. This year Evonik will for the first time select and award a public authority for its efforts in improving road safety. The winner of this award will be selected by an independent jury consisting of international road safety experts.
According to the World Health Organisation, half of the world’s road traffic deaths occur among vulnerable road users. The provision of innovative and forgiving road infrastructure and significant change in the behaviour of all road users are key factors to succeed in halving the number of traffic fatalities. With this award, Evonik wishes to raise awareness for road safety requirements, especially those addressing the needs of vulnerable road users, and highlight best practices in this field.
The Evonik Road Safety Award is designed to support sustainable road safety initiatives. It acknowledges and rewards the contributions to road safety of public authorities worldwide. The prize is awarded by Evonik upon identification of the winner by an independent jury of internationally recognised experts in the field of road safety, transport, and city design, among others from the International Road Federation (IRF) Geneva. Key criteria for the winning project/initiative are its contribution to road safety and sustainability as well as its innovative character and potential replicability.
Any completed (at least one year track record) infrastructure initiative which includes some form of road marking is a potential candidate for the award. Public authorities on a city, state, national or regional level, responsible for such an initiative can apply. Application deadline is May 15th, 2016.
