Construction of the Escenica Alterna tunnel in the Mexican resort port city of Acapulco is expected to be finished by June 2017. Work started on the 3.1km tunnel in 2013 with completion originally scheduled for October 2015. But financial problems delayed the US$200 million project which is now around three-quarters complete. Work by the contractor IDEAL - part of conglomerate Grupo Carso - includes construction of an elevated road connecting tunnel with Metlapil motorway.

Mexican construction company Empresas ICA has entered a partnership with Canadian investment company CDPQ to carry out joint road projects in Mexico. Under the arrangement, subject to Mexican government approval, ICA holds a 51% interest in the partnership and CDPQ will pay US$197.17 million to ICA for its 49% equity share of the new business. The companies are planning four projects: the Mayab motorway, the Rio-Verde-Ciudad Valles motorway, the La Piedad bypass and the Acapulco tunnel. ICA carries

Spanish IT company Indra has been awarded the US$ 21.53million contract to install its ITS smart traffic control and toll payment systems at three motorways in Mexico run by the local motorway operator Ideal. Indra will fit its equipment on the Tepic - Guadalajara motorway and on the ring roads to both cities. The toll payment system, which includes remote payment facilities, will be installed at 17 toll points including 149 lanes.

An investment of US$ 646 million will improve sections of road in Mexico’s Jalisco State, as well as other links. A 30km road connecting with Tepic will be upgraded, along with 169km of highway and 111km of another road. Mexican firm IDEAL is investing in the links.

In Mexico the contractor Ideal has been awarded a package of highway and road works worth a total of US$667 million in all.
