New road and bridge upgrades are being introduced in Nepal that will help improve transport and develop the country’s economy.

Construction work is commencing on the Nepal First Tunnel Road project.

A funding package has been secured that will help pay for a key road project in Nepal. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing a loan worth US$180 million that will be used to help pay for widening work to an 87km stretch of the East-West Highway between Kamala and Kanchanpur. At present the route has just one lane in either direction but the upgrade will see the route being widened in a bid to boost capacity and safety, with two lanes in either direction. The Nepalese Government is to receive a loan from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for a key tunnel project. The JICA loan is being offered at an interest rate of 1% for the next 40 years. The project is expected to cost in the region of US$150.1 million to construct. The new link will reduce traffic congestion on the existing Nagdhunga-Thankot road. Work is expected to commence in the next 18 months. The survey for the 2.5km tunnel has been carried out by the Department of Roads.

The Nepalese Government is opening up an expression of interest process that will generate a shortlist to carry out the Kathmandhu-Terai/Madhes Fast Track Road project. The new Kathmandhu-Nijgadh expressway will run for 76km and its construction will involve building a twin tube tunnel 1.35km long and eight bridges. The Nepalese Government has announced a major programme of transport infrastructure works for the 2014-2015 period. Road, highway and airport projects have all been prioritised. The detailed project report for the Kathmandu-Tarai Fast Track Road is to be completed within six months. Interest is said to be strong for a key highway project in Nepal. The project to build the US$1.02 billion Kathmandu-Tarai Fast Track route has attracted interest from China in the shape of the China Infrastructure Investment Corporation (CIIC) and from India with Reliance Infrastructure, and Shapoorji Pallonji. A series of major trade routes are being upgraded in Nepal, which are intended to help boost bilateral trade with neighbouring India and China.
