The 50km bypass project will face challenges and would feature 18 bridges as well as four tunnel sections. The Tbilisi Bypass Toll Road (TBTR) project will be managed as a PPP.
The route runs from Mtskheta through tunnels to the Tbilisi Sea, Avchala, Gldani and Tbilisi Lilo to Rustavi. The tender process for the project has yet to be announced however and the timeline for the work remains undefined.
The project will be built in stages, with the most costly being for the 22.5km section between Tblisi Airport and Avchala, which is expected to cost up to $300 million. The 10.4km stretch between the airport and Lochini will come with a $100 million pricetag, while the 6.5km stretch from Avchali to Tsitamuri will cost $150 million. The 11km section between Luchini and Rustavi is expected to cost $70 million to build.
The project is required to reduce congestion in the centre of Tblisi. Construction of the bypass will also reduce the number of heavy vehicles having to drive into the city, boosting safety.
