The first 3515 Intermat Middle East, the international exhibition for machinery, materials and equipment for construction and infrastructure, has been held in Abu Dhabi.

The event, a joint venture between Comexposium, S.E. INTERMAT and its partner Clarion Events Middle East, and co-located with the Arabian Construction Week, was said to meet the requirement for an event dedicated to construction materials and equipment for the fast-growing markets of the Middle East and North Africa.

It was targeted at the main decision-makers in the construction sector and was attended by around 3,200 buyers and opinion leaders.

The first edition of the exhibition was seen as satisfactory by the vast majority of the exhibitors who placed their trust in this new event, and although attendance numbers will need to be improved for future years the exhibition still attracted visitors of a high calibre, say the organisers.

This was due to the presence of a number of construction company directors, as well as representatives of government and municipal authorities on transport, ports and airports, project managers, machinery and equipment manufacturers and distributors, and wholesalers and importers of building materials and vehicles.

More than 50 contracts were secured during the course of the event.

“INTERMAT Abu Dhabi has been a major step forward for construction equipment in the region”, says Jean-Pierre Meynard, technical adviser for the construction company Saudi Oger. “Up until now, this particular sector has not had any kind of professional event associated with it.”

The event was inaugurated on its first day as part of an opening ceremony officiated by His Excellency Ahmad Mohammed Shareef, Under-Secretary of the Department of Municipal Affairs for Abu Dhabi.

A survey is now under way to glean initial feedback from the exhibitors along with accounts from all those who attended. Once this information is obtained the dates of the next INTERMAT Middle East exhibition in 2012 will be announced.
