The fatal collapse of a bridge earlier this year on a stretch of the Panamericana Highway in Peru resulted in two deaths and 41 injuries. A bus was travelling across the bridge at the time it collapsed into the Chancay River.

The Peruvian authorities are now being urged to speed the replacement of the bridge, which is causing serious transport issues.

The bridge collapsed at kilometre 75 of the Panamericana Highway in Chancay District, in Huaral Province, Lima Region. Following the collapse, the Carretera Panamericana Norte (PE-1N Highway) had to be closed in both directions in Chancay District.

The collapse was caused by the high water flow rate following heavy rains, which had damaged the bridge structure. There are also questions as to how maintenance of the bridge had been carried out, as well as its condition in recent months.

The bridge replacement is required urgently as the route is important to Peru’s economy. Chancay is around 78km to the north of Peru’s capital Lima.
