Plans are in hand in Italy for a €2 billion highway project linking Livorno with Civitavecchia. Studies are being carried out on the 206km link and once this stage is complete the Italian Interdepartmental Committee for Economic Planning (CIPE) will review the project and use the results of the studies to assess its feasibility and decide whether it can be passed for approval. Should the project get the green light and follow the planned schedule, construction would be completed by 2017. Meanwhile CIPE has given approval for construction work on a 15km link between Civitavecchia and Tarquinia. The Italian highway operator Societa Autostrada Tirrenica (SAT) has plans in hand to fund the Livorno to Civitavecchia road at present and is waiting on the decision by CIPE before putting these into action.
