The construction work for a major road tunnel project in Mumbai, India has been awarded. Worth over US$854 million, the work will be carried out by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and is expected to take 54 months to complete.

The package of works was awarded by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). L&T will design and construct a new road tunnel link connecting Orange Gate with Marine Drive Coastal Road.

The work will be handled by the Heavy Civil Infrastructure business of L&T construction. The firm says that the major scope of work for the project comprises the design and construction of twin road tunnels, using TBMs, connecting these tunnels to the existing elevated Eastern Freeway at Orange Gate near its southern terminal through transition ramps and to Marine drive at Mumbai. The project alignment will run primarily under the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road.
