A joint venture team will handle Phase 2 for the Interstate 35E (I-35E) project from Interstate 635 in Dallas to the Denton County line in Carrollton, Texas. The contract was awarded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in mid-2021, and TxDOT has now granted the joint venture final notice-to-proceed.

The Lone Star Constructors joint venture comprises Fluor Corporation and Austin Bridge & Road. The package of works is worth US$640 million and work will commence in mid-2022.

“This project is part of TxDOT’s long-term plan to meet current and future travel demands by improving overall mobility, operational efficiency, accessibility, safety and emergency response,” said Thomas Nilsson, president of Fluor’s Infrastructure business. “When completed, this project will help alleviate traffic congestion to the surrounding communities and improve connectivity for all people in the Dallas metroplex.”

The stretch of road is around 10km in length. The contract is a design-build project and includes full reconstruction and expansion of the six existing lanes to eight. The work includes adding new auxiliary lanes at entrance and exit ramps, along with the reconstruction of frontage roads along the corridor. Two existing reversible toll lanes will also be rebuilt. The project is expected to be complete in early 2026.
