North Macedonia road deal for Bechtel Enka

The US-Turkish joint venture will build four sections of the European Corridors VIII and X in the Balkan country north of Greece.

Financing has been secured by Bechtel for a key Serbian road project.

The International Road Federation recently announced the winners of the 2016 IRF Global Road Achievement Awards at a ceremony held during the 2nd IRF Asia Regional Congress & Exhibition. This year, the IRF honours 12 projects from around the world, each leading the way in innovation across major road & highway disciplines. The selection was made by an international panel of senior road development specialists.

The Bechtel Enka joint venture partnership has completed the first 20km section of the Kosovo Route 6 highway which links Pristina with Macedonia. This is the first third of the 60km highway that will connect Kosovo’s capital, Pristina with neighbouring Macedonia. The new section was opened recetnly at a ceremony attended by Kosovo President Hashin Thaci and other government officials including the Kosovo Prime Minister Isa Mustafa, Head of Parliament Kadri Veseli, and Minister of Transport Lutfi Zharku

Serbia has around €5.5 billion worth of transport infrastructure projects either in progress or in preparation, according to the government. Of the €5.5 billion of contracts, around €3 billion is for roads under construction. Minister of infrastructure, Zorana Mihajlovic, said that around 90km or motorway will be completed this year and another 200km will be rehabilitated. Italian contractor Astaldi, as part of a joint venture, has won a €100 million contract to build of motorway in Romania. The contract is 18km of the Brasov–Oradea section of the partially built A3 Autostrade, a 584km route that runs north to south, from the border with Hungary to the capital Bucharest. Astalsi’s design and construction work includes three viaducts, five overpasses, three flyovers, and one motorway interchange. Work will begin in May and last for 16 months. Plans are moving forward for a new highway that will link Kosovo’s capital Pristina with Belgrade, the capital of neighbouring Serbia. The project is of importance as it reveals the continued improvement in diplomatic relations between Serbia and Kosovo. Serbia’s Ministry of Construction says that work on the route will commence in the first half 2017. The financing model for the project has yet to be established. Talks are being held with European partners. The cost of the project has not yet been revealed

The first part of the €600 million Arber Dzaferi motorway between Pristina, the capital of Kosovo and Skopje in Macedonia, has opened to traffic.
