Various options are being considered that could provide a new fixed link for Estonia’s Muhu Island to the mainland. Both tunnel and bridge options are being evaluated, with one possible alignment for the former and two possible alignments for the latter.

The fixed link would cross the Suur Strait and the feasibility studies for the project will be carried out in 2022. At present the island is reached by a ferry service running from Virtsu on the Estonian mainland to Kuivastu on Muhu Island.

Local communities are being contacted by the Estonian Government to discuss the project.

Should the feasibility study determine that the ferry service is more viable than either a bridge or a tunnel, then the existing transport link will be retained. However, should the bridge or tunnel options prove more viable, then these will then be considered separately. Other issues also have to be evaluated as no surveys have so far been carried out of the seabed in the Suur Strait.
