Lane Construction is to work on a major highway widening contract in North Carolina. The firm will carry out the widening work to a 17.6km stretch of I-40 in Orange County as a design-build contract worth US$236 million.

The Interstate highway will be widened from its current four lanes in either direction so that it features six lanes in either direction. The work will be carried out between the interchange with I-85 and the Durham County line and will also include improvements to four interchanges along the I-40 route. Lane Construction is the US subsidiary of the Italian firm, Webuild Group.

North Carolina has seen an increase in population, with a growth in vehicle numbers also. New highway widening work across North Carolina will help reduce chronic congestion on key connections

Of note will be the construction method, with the existing concrete surface being milled and recycled to form the sub-base for the new road surface. Asphalt from the existing road will also be milled out and recycled.

Construction will commence in the third quarter of 2022 and is due for completion in late 2025. The work is intended to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on the route, which currently suffers delays at peak periods.
