A landmark bridge project is being proposed in Tanzania. A new bridge connecting the islands of Zanzibar with mainland Tanzania is under consideration. Should the work for the project go ahead, this would be the longest such sea crossing ever to be built in Africa.

Talks have been held regarding the project between Tanzania’s Ministry for Works and Transport and the Chinese contractor China Overseas Engineering Group Company. Connecting Dar es Salaam with Zanzibar by a sea crossing could cost as much as US$2.7 billion.

Given the storms that occur in the area as well as the rough seas that do happen at times, the structure would have to be able to cope with very tough conditions.
