Hamm: Many new features in earthworks and asphalt construction

Hamm is presenting a packed program at Conexpo/CON-AGG 2023, including several world premieres as well as innovative further developments. The spectrum of innovations ranges from electrified tandem rollers, compactors, pneumatic-tire rollers and pivot-steered tandem rollers, right through to the Smart Doc compaction app for self-monitoring and documentation.

New at Hamm: Tandem rollers with electric drive

Particular focus is placed on the electric tandem rollers in the HD CompactLine series, which is used across the world. They compact with zero local emissions and are also extremely quiet. The operation and the compaction parameters are identical to the diesel-driven machines. The completely battery-powered rollers can work for an entire typical work day with the Li-ion battery (capacity 23 kWh) without needing to be charged. The rollers are expected to be available in the USA from the end of 2023.

North American premiere for earthworks: Compactors in the HC series

With the HC series, Hamm is bringing together all compactors with an operating weight of 24,251–55,116 lbs (11–25 t) on a single platform. The engine power levels are between 85 and 160 kW; their emissions comply with the respective regional requirements. Thanks to an integrated ECO-Mode, the rollers work in the economical partial-load range for most of the time. With over 20% increased tread, around 30% increased space, and more storage compartments, the Easy Drive cabs are more comfortable than ever. Many options are available for all models – from the automatic engine stop through to the dozer blade. Thanks to numerous interfaces, the compactors in the HC series are "digital-ready", in other words, they are ready to be used in an extremely wide range of tools, including the Smart Doc app. In addition to the variants that were hitherto available on the market, in the future, there will also be CR machines with specially reinforced equipment for use on rocky ground and on difficult terrain.

HC CompactLine series – another premiere for North America

In the segment for small compactors (11,023–15,432 lbs, 5–7 t), Hamm is showcasing the HC CompactLine series. In contrast to the predecessor models, Hamm has further improved the driving comfort, and has increased the traction and gradeability. The HC 70i model is still the most compact roller in the 7 t class on the market. Various digital tools are available for all HC CompactLine models, in particular the Smart Doc app. It supports GNSS-based self-monitoring and documentation.

Smart Doc: Digital assistant for compaction

The free Smart Doc app shows in real-time how the compaction develops, and links the machine data to GNSS position data. The app creates clear compaction results in PDF format. They are suitable for self-monitoring as well as for documentation with respect to clients. No separate monitor is required to operate the app. It works simply via standard Android smartphones or tablets. In the 2023 asphalt season, M2M (machine to machine) communication and M2C (machine to cloud) communication will also play a role.

The Smart Doc app from Hamm makes it very easy to create compaction reports for self-monitoring and documentation.

World premiere: HP 100i articulated pneumatic-tire roller

With the HP 100i articulated pneumatic-tire roller, Hamm is presenting a world premiere at the Conexpo/CON-AGG. The base weight of the roller is 13,228 lbs (6 t) and can be increased to up to 22,046 lbs (10 t) using different ballast kits. With five wheels on the front axle and four wheels on the rear axle, the new pneumatic-tire roller has a working width of 68" (1725 mm). The generous overlap of the tire tracks results in homogeneous compaction. At the same time, the 3-point articulated joint ensures high maneuverability. The roller is ideal for applications such as chipseal and asphalt compaction on smaller construction sites. A water-sprinkling system and various scrapers can be integrated on request. The speed can be adjusted safely and conveniently directly at the driving lever. Clever speed control depending on the steering angle means that the roller can always be maneuvered safely through curves despite the extremely high final speed.

Brand new for asphalt construction: Pivot-steered tandem rollers in the HX series

The HX series is the new flagship from Hamm for asphalt construction. The pivot-steered tandem rollers 15,432 (7 t) or 19,842 (9 t) are following in the footsteps of the DV+ series and are designed for high-quality compaction. There are models with split and non-split vibration and oscillation drums, as well as combination rollers. A key component of the well-conceived compaction technology is the integrated automatic reversing: It brakes and accelerates the rollers quickly, but smoothly. The electrically adjustable seat operating unit, which automatically turns to the direction of travel when reversing, is unique on the market. The excellent visibility also contributes to the quality – including a window in the cab floor for a view of the drums.

Trade show premiere: HTC trench rollers

The HTC 15 articulated trench roller for compaction in trenches is new to the Hamm range. It is equipped with two 32" (80 cm) wide padfoot drums, making it perfect for compacting cohesive soils. It is operated via infrared remote control. This brings several advantages: On the one hand, the roller stops as soon as the operator no longer has a line of sight. On the other hand, the signal transmission via infrared does not interfere with other radio links on the construction site. The low center of gravity of the 3307 lbs (1.5 t) roller ensures an extremely low tendency to tip.

HD+120i VIO-2 HF tandem roller: New possibilities for compaction

The HD+ 120i VIO-2 HF articulated tandem roller is also new. Hamm is therefore opening up new possibilities, since it is equipped with two completely maintenance-free VIO drums. Both drums can work with vibration or with oscillation; this can be switched from the driver's seat. Furthermore, Hamm has developed a special automatic vibration system for this machine. The front drum in the direction of travel always operates in vibration mode, while the rear drum operates in oscillation mode; when reversing, the drums are switched automatically. This results in high compaction power – but operation always remains simple. These 26,455 lbs (12 t) machines compact at a high frequency (> 4000 VPM). As a result, they produce homogeneous asphalt surface courses even at high driving speeds and achieve high surface outputs. The market launch of the 12-ton machine is scheduled for the end of 2023.

Novel rubber tyre roller from Hamm

The base weight of the roller is 6tonnes and can be increased to up to 10tonnes using different ballast kits. With five wheels on the front axle and four wheels on the rear axle, the new pneumatic-tyre roller has a working width of 1725mm. The overlap of the tyre tracks is said to result in homogeneous compaction. At the same time, the three-point articulated joint is said to deliver high manoeuvrability. The roller can be used for applications chipseal and asphalt compaction on smaller construction sites. A water-sprinkling system and various scrapers can be integrated on request. Working speed can be adjusted directly at the driving lever. A novel speed control system depending on the steering angle means that the roller can always be manoeuvred accurately through curves despite the high final speed.

Kleemann: Mobile Screen for Coarse Elements MOBISCREEN MSS 802(i) EVO

The new MOBISCREEN MSS 802(i) EVO offers users a mobile, efficient screening plant that was designed to meet changing challenges in different application areas. With its well-thought-out plant design and flexible conversion options, Kleemann demonstrates how a high material flow can be guaranteed in natural stone and recycling applications.

Screening made easy

With the development of the MOBISCREEN MSS 802(i) EVO, a new generation of screening plants and successor of the MS 15 Z, Kleemann consciously places the focus on the user perspective. The technology behind the screening process must be easy and safe to use for all users. The new plant impresses not only with technological highlights in the process sequence, but also through its ergonomic design, optimised operation and the user-friendly maintenance concept.

Improved mobility and flexibility in application

With its proportionally controlled running gear, the plant can be quickly relocated either by a low-loader to the job site or within the building site. Apart from other improvements of the new MSS 802(i) EVO, folding of the side discharge conveyors without the need for disassembly clearly reduces set-up times. Increased application variability is provided by a hopper rear wall that can be folded to three heights, which permits feeding of crushing plants with a lower discharge height. The large offer of screen surfaces and simple adjustment of the screen parameters, which make rapid adaptation of the MSS 802(i) EVO to a very wide range of feed materials possible, reduce set-up times and thus personnel requirements and costs. The screen casing angle with a wide adjustment range from 15.4 – 20° makes optimisation of the screening capacity possible.   Special highlight: the simple and fast conversion from 3- to 2-way grit. The MSS 802(i) EVO can therefore be used to produce and discharge two or three final grain sizes and the conversion is fast and simple.

Operability and ergonomics for more comfort and safety

An intuitive plant control with automatic start reduces the risk of operating errors and saves learning times. All relevant functions can be operated from a safe distance, which offers high work safety. Further user-friendly aspects include very good access options and intelligent cleaning solutions, which minimise downtimes caused by maintenance. With all of these solutions, Kleemann placed the focus on the typical workday of users. This also applies to the standard series LED lighting, the optionally available extended premium lighting of work areas or the generously proportioned work platforms.

Efficient and precise process sequences for optimum material flow

An optimised material flow is a central aspect of all screening plants. Only if all components are tuned to one another can high productivity with minimised operating costs be achieved. With its new mobile screen for coarse elements, Kleemann demonstrates what screening plants of the latest generation can achieve. This includes a wide crusher discharge conveyor on which, like all of the other conveyors, the speed can be steplessly adjusted, as well as a large material transfer system to the screen deck for optimum utilisation of the screening surfaces. High discharge heights and thus higher stockpiles thanks to the optionally available extended crusher discharge conveyor and telescopic side discharge conveyors guarantee ideal processes on the building site.

It goes without saying that the new MOBISCREEN MSS 802(i) EVO can be operated through line coupling with all EVO and PRO crushing plants integrated in the process and safety system. Special application flexibility is provided by the stockpile probe required for the process coupling, which can be placed on any discharge conveyor of the plant.

Utility trencher for North America from Mastenbroek

The Bulldog is 10.9m long and is designed to work in confined areas, with a forward discharge conveyor system that retracts to give a 2.5m width, making it is easy to transport.

Borrowing much of Mastenbroek's engineering prowess from the existing 17/17 trencher, the new Bulldog features a new engine and enhanced digging mechanism. The new US-specific trencher features a Tier 4 final compliant Volvo 8litre engine offering the ideal combination of power, efficiency and emissions.

Complementing the Volvo engine is a new diesel hydrostatic drive system developed by Mastenbroek to power the new heavier digging mechanism, which can achieve the 1.8m trench depth required by US cable layers.

The Bulldog also features an offset cutting head and forward swing conveyor making it ideal for operating in cities and on highways where access is restricted and excavated material needs to be loaded onto trucks for removal offsite. A steerable undercarriage enables curved trench lines, and the track lift allows the machine to straddle raised pedestrian walkways.

The company intends to establish a regional dealer network to sell and service the machine.

Innovative ejector body for ADTs from K-Tec

The KA Group is offering a novel ejector body that can be used with ADTs. The K-Tec EJB4X Ejector Body is designed to be fitted on the back of a Volvo A45G articulated hauler, increasing the versatility of the machine. The EJB allows ADTs to eject loaded material safely in areas with reduced overhead clearance. The unit is of particular importance for site with overhead cables, which would otherwise pose a hazard for conventional ADTs with tipping bodies. The ejector system is also of benefit for controlled spreading of materials as well as as allowing materials to be spread on slopes without the risk of an ADT toppling over.

Wirtgen: AutoTrac for the WR series

In view of growing demands for environmentally compatible processes, the need for responsible handling of valuable resources is also increasing in the areas of soil stabilisation and cold recycling. Cost-effective realisation of these processes is only possible when they are efficiently executed. With the launch of the AutoTrac system for the WR series, it now offers a technology that focuses on precisely this.

Pioneering technology for soil stabilisation and cold recycling

Soil stabilisers are used, for example, for the resource-friendly preparation of road beds in the course of traffic infrastructure projects. A sub-base with insufficient load bearing capacity is transformed into resilient ground that can withstand heavier loading. This process takes the existing soil material and simply adds and mixes in binding agents such as cement and/or lime. In the case of cold recycling with WR series machines, damaged asphalt layers are milled and resized in a single operation, re-bound by the addition of binding agents and water and then repaved. The new base layers produced on site then stand out due to their exceptional bearing capacity.

Automatic steering system for optimal overlaps

The AutoTrac automatic steering system makes Wirtgen cold recyclers and soil stabilisers even more efficient.
The AutoTrac automatic steering system makes Wirtgen cold recyclers and soil stabilisers even more efficient.

By enabling precise, automatic steering, the AutoTrac system helps Wirtgen wheeled recyclers to achieve greater process efficiency and, as a result of this, a high degree of environmental compatibility. It steers the machine precisely within tolerances reckoned in centimetres on the basis of a previously calculated reference strip and a specified overlap of adjacent strips, enabling consistent utilisation of the machine’s ideal working width. AutoTrac relies, among other things, on various global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) for precise determination of the machine’s position and direction of travel. The system is operated from an additional control panel that also enables the operator to view information about the position of the machine and previously completed strips.

Make the best of savings potentials and increase process quality

Considering the sum of the large, avoidable overlaps with neighbouring strips that can occur in manual operations and the corresponding wastage of resources, the potential savings the system can bring soon become obvious. Keeping to the pre-set overlaps reduces the consumption of binding agents, consumables and fuel, makes the carbon footprint smaller and shortens the project completion time. The outcome of this is increased process efficiency and, in consequence, greater cost-effectiveness and environmental compatibility. Manual steering of the machine always requires considerable effort when it comes to avoiding unprocessed gaps in the ground being worked. Here again, the automatic steering system assists the operator and reduces the workload. Maintaining the desired overlap avoids unwanted gaps in the final results. Knowing this allows the operator to concentrate fully on the mixing process and keep an eye on what’s going on around the machine.
